And with polls showing that, for the most part, each has as equal a shot at the White House as the other, Obama and Romney will engage in unvarnished efforts to mobilize their core supporters.
"I need you, Ohio," Obama admitted to a 20,000-strong crowd in Cincinnati, in a state for which both candidates are fighting tooth and nail.

Both candidates campaigned deep into the night on Sunday, with Romney too imploring his supporters to get out the vote in the handful of battleground states where the next occupant of the White House will be decided.
"We've got a little work to do in the coming days ... which is to make sure we have a win on Tuesday night," the Republican nominee said at a night rally in Newport News, Virginia.
The final dash underlined the tightness of a race that is drawing to a close with the rival candidates and their aides confidently predicting victory after months of campaigning and conflicting fortunes in opinion polls.
As the clock ticked down to Tuesday's vote, Romney's efforts included a surprise foray into Pennsylvania, a Democratic-leaning state that Republican strategists say is breaking his way.
"We're taking back the White House because we're going to win Pennsylvania," Romney told a crowd of up to 30,000, according to US Secret Service estimates quoted by the campaign, who had gathered on a farm in frigid weather.
Obama advisers dismissed the trip as a sign of desperation from the challenger less than 48 hours from election day.
And yet a valuable character witness, former president Bill Clinton, will headline four rallies for Obama on Monday in Pennsylvania, to counter Romney's late push there.
Democrats said they were confident of Obama's small but steady lead in key swing states, but acknowledged that everything now depends on getting the vote out.

In a new CNN/ORC poll of likely voters, Obama and Romney stood at 49 per cent each.
A survey by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News gave Obama 48 per cent support and Romney 47 per cent — a statistical dead heat.
And only a Pew poll found that Obama led 48 per cent to 45 per cent among likely voters who already have made up their minds, with four per cent saying they remain uncommitted.

Arvind Kejriwal's party envisions direct rule of people
NEW DELHI: Direct rule of the people, fighting corruption and eliminating price rise will be the focus of the political party being started by Arvind Kejriwal and other activists, a vision document for the party said.
The document comes as Kejriwal, along with other colleagues of the erstwhile Team Anna, is set to announce his political party.
"It is a big day for the common people. They are fed up of corrupt politicians and rising prices and are coming together to change the politics of the country," Kejriwal, donning a Gandhi cap with "Mein hoon aam admi, mujhe chahiye Janlokpal" (I am common man, I want Jan Lokpal) printed on it, told reporters shortly before he started a meeting with other activists on Tuesday.
The vision document terms the decision to launch a party as the "quest for swaraj (self rule) - from subjecthood to citizenship".
It also seeks establishment of a Jan Lokpal, and electoral reforms to "eliminate role of money and muscle power" from elections.
"Citizens must be consulted on any decision that affects their livelihood. Broad ranging and fundamental administrative, police and judicial reforms need to be initiated so that the interface of common citizen with public functionaries is not marked by bribes, delay and indignity," said the document.
"All public functionaries should be made accountable to people. Private monopoly on natural resources would not be allowed," it said.
"This is just a trailer. Once the party is launched, the full picture will be seen," activist and key member Yogendra Yadav said referring to the document.
Shanti Bhushan, Prashant Bhushan, and Manish Sisodia were the other key members present.
The vision document is, however, to be edited after more consultations, Manish Sisodia said.
Name for the new party will be announced on November 26, on constitution day.
Kejriwal, who was among the key members to draft anti-graft legislation for formation of Lokpal, announced launch of his political party recently, resulting in a rift with Anna Hazare, the face of the campaign.
He reiterated that there was no rift between them.
Discussing his political outfit, Kejriwal said: "People will give us money - they will campaign, they will fight the elections."
He said the party would contest assembly elections in Delhi next year.
Replying to a question on Hazare supporting the outfit, Kejriwal said: "It is a test for us. If we put up good candidates, Anna will support."
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) welcomed the move, saying all Indians had the right to contest elections.

Smugglers use Sri Lanka as transit point to pump in gold
CHENNAI: Sri Lanka seems to have become a transit point for smugglers bringing gold here from places like Dubai and Singapore. In the past month, bureau of immigration officials at Chennai airport arrested 13 people, including several Sri Lankan Tamils, and seized 3.5kg of gold. At least 30kg of gold has been recovered at Chennai airport from smugglers so far this year, sources said.
A senior immigration officer confirmed the new route. "As officials double-check baggage of air passengers from Dubai and Singapore, smugglers are taking a lengthy route via Sri Lanka to avoid being scanned with extra care," a police officer said.
Inquiries with the carriers caught so far have revealed that they get a mere 5,000-10,000 for a trip to India. "Of the 13 arrested in the past one month, at least 10 are Sri Lankan Tamils," an official said.
"We believe the smugglers are also using a few other lesser known routes to bring in gold illegally into our country. We have stepped up security arrangements at Trichy, Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Bangalore airports apart from Chennai airport. A special circular has been sent to staff at these airports to check carefully the baggage of passengers arriving from Sri Lanka," an immigration officer said.
The increase in the gold prices in India has led to smugglers trying to bring in gold from abroad, officials said. Several attempts to smuggle in the yellow metal had been successful, but a number of attempts had been thwarted with the help of informers, they added. "We are getting information about smuggling of valuables from abroad through sources. Though most of the carriers arrested don't know much about the bigger network, special teams are on the trail of the big fish," the immigration officer said.

No backtracking on reforms, UPA is stable: Government
Senior ministers maintained that there was no threat to the stability of the government even if Trinamool Congress quits on Friday and hinted at scouting for new allies.
They insisted that the strike organised by eight non-UPA parties as well as NDA has had no impact except for causing economic losses.
"The net effect of this strike is greater economic loss. When you protest, you should not protest in a manner that causes economic losses," finance minister P Chidambaram said.
Information and broadcasting minister Ambika Soni said that while limited protest was alright, it should not be to an extent that "cause harm" to the interest of people.
Making it clear that government would not go back on FDI in retail decision, law minister Salman Khurshid said, "we have tried to bring reforms with a human face. Please don't ask whether we are going to change the human face. The human face remains."
He said the government was pushing reforms to give "massive" economic growth to the country and "if opposition slows down that, we won't get it by what they have done today."
On the strike, he said the parties have "given their point of view, they have shown their protest, now let us go back to our factories, get back to our shops, get back to our schools and get back to our work."
On the stability aspect, he said, "we had enough friends today, we had enough friends yesterday... so I don't know why you should doubt our stability."

Army officers, jawans face off again in J&K
This comes close after officers and jawans of an artillery regiment deployed in the Nyoma sub-district of eastern Ladakh had violently clashed with each other - which left the unit commanding officer, two majors and two jawans grievously injured -- in May.
The incident on Wednesday was triggered when the jawan, Arun V, who hails from Thiruvananthapuram, shot himself with his service rifle in the camp of the 16th Light Cavalry at Samba in the morning. He died on the spot.
Sources said "tension" between the officers and jawans of the 16th Cavalry had been "simmering for quite some time" without any corrective steps being taken. The suicide proved to be the tipping point. "Angry jawans then ganged up to surround the officers and their residences in protest, leading to a prolonged face-off," said a source.
The gravity of the situation and the "complete failure of command and control" was such that senior officers, including the commander of the Yol-based 9 Corps, Lt-General A K Bhalla, rushed to the spot to calm down inflamed tempers. All officers of the 16th Cavalry were subsequently moved out of their residences and attached to different messes as a precautionary move to prevent the trouble from escalating further.
There were even indications that two Army units had been rushed to Samba, which houses a brigade and the armoured regiment, to control the situation. The Army HQ in New Delhi, on being contacted, said a court of inquiry had been ordered into the incident but denied that there was any violent brawl between the officers and jawans.
"There was a suicide but no clash. Yes, the unit officers have been moved to different messes to ensure an impartial probe. The corps commander (Lt-Gen Bhalla) is camping in the area and the situation is under control," said an officer.
All this does not happen if the case is of a simple suicide. Incidentally, defence minister A K Antony on Wednesday told Parliament that as many as 1,018 soldiers had committed suicide since 2003, with the yearly toll regularly climbing over 100. Incidents of fragging (to kill or wound a fellow soldier) have also become a regular phenomenon in the 1.13-million strong Army.
A report by the Defence Institute of Psychological Research had earlier held that "perceived humiliation and harassment, over and above occupational and familial causes", at the hands of their superiors often serves as the final "trigger" for jawans in stress-related cases in the armed forces.

Team Anna to to call off fast tomorrow, pitches for a political alternative
Anna Hazare's announcement on calling off the agitation demanding Lokpal Bill at 5pm tomorrow came on a day when a group of eminent personalities, including jurist V R Krishna Iyer and former Army Chief Gen V K Singh, appealed for an end to the fast as the health of Arvind Kejriwal and two others deteriorated.
"We will end the fast tomorrow at 5pm," Hazare said at the end of an address in which he enunciated the civil society's approach to forming a political alternative.
The end to the fast also comes in the wake of the government's steadfast attitude in not engaging with Hazare and his team, a year after both sides were involved in drafting a law and Parliament adopting a "sense of House" resolution on passage of Lokpal Bill.
On the earlier occasions in April and August last year, the government appeared to have come under pressure from Hazare's protests which drew huge crowds in the capital and elsewhere.
The protest fast has been marked by low turnout, contradictory statements and levelling of wild charges against government and its functionaries. While Hazare refused to attack Pranab Mukherjee after he became President, his team members continued to level allegations against him.
Talking about providing an alternative to the current system, Hazare ruled out launching or joining a political party but asked people to come out with ideas on how the alternative can be provided.
"It is time for us to think of an alternative. We want a political alternative. But I will not launch or join a party. People should decide who should be given tickets and how to achieve that alternative system," he said.
Questions still remained as to what Team Anna would do regarding the political alternative and whether they would launch a party themselves.

Mallika Sherawat on a Parisian holiday with Banderas
Grooving with Antonio Banderas in billionaire Paul Allen's yacht or hitting the clubs and coffee shops at Cannes with the actor may have been just a 'friendly gesture' on Mallika Sherawat's part. However, a picture of them dancing, which surfaced online, has reportedly caused cracks in Banderas' 15-yearlong marriage to Melanie Griffith.
Seemingly oblivious to her dirty dancing making it to the headlines, Mallika is now planning a vacation with Banderas. We found out that the actress, busy shooting for Kismat Luv Paisa Dilli at the moment, will be off to Paris on August 7 to meet the Hollywood actor.
After a report of Banderas and Griffith's marriage troubles surfaced in the local media, Mallika, who is currently in Mumbai, tweeted in disbelief. 'Really?!' wrote the actress attaching a picture of the report with it. Needless to say, she remained unavailable when contacted.
A close friend of Mallika, however called us up soon after. "Let me be very clear about the facts. On date, Mallika and Antonio are indeed very close," the friend stated. "In fact, after getting to know each other in Cannes, they have stayed in touch," said the friend and added "Very much," as a qualifier.
Confirming Mallika's visit to Paris, the friend told us, "Antonio has invited her over. She is leaving on August 7. In fact, he is very keen to work in a film with her." But that, obviously isn't the focus right now.
"Right now, she is going to Paris simply because Antonio has invited her. And nobody knows how many days she plans to stay over," added the friend. Well, she surely won't wear out her welcome too soon.

President poll: Pranab Mukherjee writes to Mamata seeking support
KOLKATA: With three days to go for the presidential election, UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee has written a letter to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee seeking her support.
The chief minister posted a copy of Mukherjee's letter on her Facebook page stating that she received it today.
"The President stands above party politics. Given an opportunity, it shall be my endeavour to protect the values of this office: integrity, impartiality and the promotion of 'Sarva dharma sambhav' which constitute the essence and spirit of our Constitution," Mukherjee wrote in the letter.
"If my election has any meaning, it is only as part of our common service to our motherland. It is in this spirit that I seek your valuable support in this election," he said, adding, he is honoured that UPA allies and other parties have considered him worthy for the post.
Recalling that he began his public life in his ancestral village in West Bengal, he said he was schooled in politics by the pro-poor commitment of Indira Gandhi.
"And it remains my dream to eliminate the last vestiges of that terrifying affliction called poverty within our lifetimes," Mukherjee said.
The Trinamool Congress chief has already said that she would make known her decision on whom to support three days before the presidential polls on July 19.
When asked by reporters in Srinagar earlier in the day, if he would appeal to Banerjee, an ally of UPA at the Centre, to vote for him, Mukherjee said, "I appeal to her almost every day...that is for her to decide".
Three months after Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari announced $1 million donation for Ajmer dargah during his visit to the country, the shrine authorities are still waiting for the release of the money.
Zardari visited the holy shrine of Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer on April 8 and a member of his delegation had on his behalf announced the donation for the welfare of the dargah.
"The donation has not been delivered so far," Syed Wahid Hussain Chisti, secretary of Anjuman committee, a representative body of Khadims (priests), told this news agency.
"Officials from the High Commission of Pakistan came to us after Zardari's visit and discussed with us our developmental plans.
"On their invitation, I went to the Pakistan High Commission last month where they again discussed the development plans," he said.
"I apprised them that we use the donation for welfare activities but did not submit specific plan for Zardari's donation because we did not go to Zardari to seek the donation," he said.
"We are not asking for the donation but when Zardari has made a promise, he should keep it," he said.
Along with the Khadim's body, the dargah committee has also staked claim on the donation for the development of the dargah, sources said.
Pakistan High Commission sources said in Delhi that there has been a delay in release of money because "we were waiting for the dargah committee to submit the plans on how they plan to use the money".
"The entire thing is on. A soon as we get the plans on how they plan to utilize the money, we will will release it," they said.

The Trinamool Congress chief has already said that she would make known her decision on whom to support three days before the presidential polls on July 19.
When asked by reporters in Srinagar earlier in the day, if he would appeal to Banerjee, an ally of UPA at the Centre, to vote for him, Mukherjee said, "I appeal to her almost every day...that is for her to decide".
Three months after Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari announced $1 million donation for Ajmer dargah during his visit to the country, the shrine authorities are still waiting for the release of the money.
Zardari visited the holy shrine of Khawaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer on April 8 and a member of his delegation had on his behalf announced the donation for the welfare of the dargah.
"The donation has not been delivered so far," Syed Wahid Hussain Chisti, secretary of Anjuman committee, a representative body of Khadims (priests), told this news agency.
"Officials from the High Commission of Pakistan came to us after Zardari's visit and discussed with us our developmental plans.
"On their invitation, I went to the Pakistan High Commission last month where they again discussed the development plans," he said.
"I apprised them that we use the donation for welfare activities but did not submit specific plan for Zardari's donation because we did not go to Zardari to seek the donation," he said.
"We are not asking for the donation but when Zardari has made a promise, he should keep it," he said.
Along with the Khadim's body, the dargah committee has also staked claim on the donation for the development of the dargah, sources said.
Pakistan High Commission sources said in Delhi that there has been a delay in release of money because "we were waiting for the dargah committee to submit the plans on how they plan to use the money".
"The entire thing is on. A soon as we get the plans on how they plan to utilize the money, we will will release it," they said.

Think before you drink: Satyamev Jayate
Nothing is more precious than life itself. But how many people understand that? How often have we consumed alcohol casually and chosen to drive after that? Are we responsible when we drink?
This is why the 11th episode of Satyamev Jayate was much needed. Aamir Khan chose to introduce the theme of alcoholism on his show to highlight the ills and effects of it. Alcohol consumed irresponsibly affects not only those who consume, but also innocent people who become victim to it. Vijay Simha, who works at a senior post with Tehelka, narrated his journey into the world of despair and madness driven by a sheer addiction to alcohol. Vijay's story was heart wrenching as he cut off from his family and most people, lost his job and finally made it to the streets of Delhi for a period of 9 months.
Similar was the story of Laxman who abused his body with alcohol for forty years, to an extent where he spent Rs 40 lacks: half on medical treatment for his liver and half on alcohol consumption. But it was Alcoholics Anonymous which saved both Vijay and Laxman. An organization that keeps the identity of people anonymous, it also helps rides them off the addiction through therapy and classes. Both Vijay and Laxman have been free of alcohol for more than 10 years.
Next up on the show was Dr Ashish Deshpande, a psychiatrist from Mumbai who clarified that alcoholism is a disease, caused by a problem in the genes. The alcoholic receptors in our body increase every time we drink alcohol. But we also need to treat the disease and cannot afford to be careless and leave it to blaming. Famous lyricist Javed Akhtar also made his appearance as a guest on the show. Akhtar himself had been a victim to alcohol for 27 years and he blatantly confessed that all the mistakes he made were under its influence. He discouraged youngsters from drinking alcohol simply because it looks glamorous. Further adding that people can be seen in only three ways when they consume alcohol: hateful, donkeys or as both.
Sumir Anand from New Delhi broke down on the show while narrating the tragic incident of his 15 year old son, Curran Anand. Curran along with two of his friends died in a terrible car accident because the person driving them was seeking revenge from a friend and chose to speed off with the other three boys in the car. Under the heavy influence of alcohol, he killed all three but remained untouched by injury himself. And shockingly, he was out on bail the very next day!
Mr Anand raised a question on the drinking laws of the country. In most cases involving car accidents, 98% of the accused are set free and don't go to jail. Vivek Benegal from NIMHANS revealed that 1 out of every 20 persons in the country is an alcoholic. Also, every second person in the country indulges in hazardous drinking. That adds up to a total of 50% of our population. Quite scary!
So how much is too much? Dr Benegal shared that upto 2 pegs (30ml each) is normal for consumption. And not more than four pegs of alcohol should be consumed. But Indians consume anywhere between 5-6 pegs. A research done by WHO ( World Health Organization) showed that amongst the many countries where research was conducted, in India alone, (Bangalore) 25% of patients who visited hospitals had injured themselves because of alcohol and 35% of patients had been injured by drunk people.
Aamir's team also interviewed doctors from across the country who revealed that in India cases of road accidents were very high (especially the state of Goa). So how can we put a stop to it? In many states across the nation, through the intervention of the panchayat, alcohol shops can be banned and this is legally authorized by the government of India. Changal village in Punjab sets an example for all to follow by self imposing the prohibition of alcohol in that village.
Also Aamir's question to the country was an important one. Should the law against drunken driving be made more stringent and should stronger action be taken against those who drink and drive? Says Aamir on the show "Alcohol is like fire. It all depends on how you treat it. Does alcohol control you or do you control it?" A pat on the shoulder to Aamir and his team.
As conscientious citizens, we need to answer these questions. Because life is the most precious treasure. And no one has the right to misuse or abuse it.

Pakistans U Turn Over Sarabjit
Pakistan's U-turn on an order for the release of Sarabjit Singh, the Indian dubbed a spy and condemned to death for bombings 22 years ago, set off speculation on Wednesday about whether the decision, attributed to President Asif Ali Zardari's office, was made under pressure from the powerful Islamists.
The report on the midnight drama, which saw another lifer called Surjeet Singh being released instead of Sarabjit, appeared in many copies of TOI on Wednesday. While Sarabjit's heartbroken family blamed pressure from Islamic fundamentalists, many Pakistani observers, too, pointed out that the Jamaat-e-Islami and the Jamaat-ud Dawa had condemned the move to free Sarabjit. The JuD, which is the Lashkar's front, tweeted, "Not a single demand for samjhota Terrorists & innocent Pakistanis in Ind Jails, instead convicted terrorist sirabjit allowd to live shame.(sic)"
Pakistan's Geo TV anchor Hamid Mir, who did a talk show on Sarabjit's release on Tuesday night, told TOI that the government had changed its mind following a strong reaction from opposition parties, including ones with no representation in parliament. Mir said with Sarabjit's release Zardari wanted to convey a strong message to the apex court which had earlier turned down his clemency plea for the bodyguard of Pakistan's property tycoon Malik Riaz.
The PML-N's reaction came during Mir's talk show after he aired a recorded confession of Sarabjit on the blasts. "How can you pardon a person who has confessed before camera that he was responsible for several terror acts in Pakistan," asked PML-N lawmaker Khwaja Saad Rafiq.
Shiekh Waqas Ahmed of the PML-Q, who was recently inducted as federal minister in the new cabinet, had defended reports of Sarabjit's release and even claimed that he had checked from his sources that the president had awarded clemency for Sarabjit as his case was one of mistaken identity. "We must reciprocate after the release of Pakistani virologist Dr Khalil Chishty by Indian authorities. I think President Zardari's move will send a positive signal across the border," Shiekh Waqas had said. But hours later, his sources were proved wrong by Zardari's spokesman.
It took more than eight hours for Pakistan to retract the report that Zardari had commuted to life the death sentence of Sarabjit. Until late Tuesday, officials were constantly telling the Pakistani media that the man being released was Sarabjit. They even quoted law minister Farooq H Naek as having ordered his release. All local TV stations quoted Naek except the official channel, PTV News, and the state-owned wire service, Associated Press of Pakistan, which ignored the story.
At 12.05am on Wednesday, exactly eight hours after news of Sarabjit's release broke, presidential spokesman Farhatullah Babur stunned journalists with a clarification that authorities had taken steps for the release of another Indian prisoner named Surjeet Singh. "I think there is some confusion. First, it is not a case of pardon. More importantly, it is not Sarabjit. It is Surjeet Singh, son of Sucha Singh. His death sentence was commuted in 1989 by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan on the advice of (then premier) Benazir Bhutto," Babur said.
While many Pakistani dailies called it an international embarrassment, observers said it seriously dented the credibility of the president's office. "The government's non-serious approach about clarification raises doubts about its credibility on all fronts," said Nazrul Islam, an Islamabad-based political analyst. "The silence of the official news channel at a time when anonymous government officials were confusing millions of people with wrong information indicated that it could have been pre-planned," Nazar added.
